Parents and Carers

Our parents and carers are a key part of Team Gillas - we really value their support and look to involve them in as many ways as possible.

Mrs Monaghan is on the door every morning and on the gate most nights, so if you need to talk over any minor issues or want a message passing on to class teachers, this is the ideal time to do it. If you need to discuss anything that might take a bit longer, please make an appointment using Class Dojo.

Parent Governors

We currently have 0 parent governor vacancies.

Family Reading Workshops

As all of our families know, we place a really high importance on reading and promoting a lifelong love of reading. Each half term we run a Family Reading Workshop - these often have a surprise twist such as a gift or a buffet. Make sure you keep your eyes peeled on Class Dojo for the date of the next one and make sure you come along so you don't miss out!

Rise and Read

Parents and carers were in for a treat for this family Reading Workshop! Not only did they get to read with their children and take part in a real-life phonics lesson, they got a scrummy pancake breakfast too!

Family Learning

We work with Active Sunderland to run regular Family Learning projects - our most recent one was based around our raised beds and Kath's Community Kitchen. The soup the Family Learning group made was grown, harvested and cooked right here at Gillas Lane and it tasted delicious!

Keep your eyes peeled on Class Dojo for the next one!

Early Help

The Early Help service works closely with families in Sunderland to provide the right level of support at the right time. They can support you with any concerns about your children, your family and your home circumstances. This might be about behaviour, problems at school, housing, debt, routines and boundaries, or other difficulties you're experiencing.

This support means families can make their own lives and find solutions to problems. Getting help early helps to prevent little concerns from becoming big concerns.

Why use Early Help?

Being a parent or carer is one of the most important jobs there is, but it is also one of the hardest. Parents and carers are key to giving children a happy, stable childhood. If one person in your family has a problem - it might be a child, young person or adult - then the whole family are often affected. If the whole family is supported, then it's more likely things will improve.

Encouraging Open Conversations at Home

How many of us have felt that frustration when we ask our children what they have been up to at school and they say "nothing"? Children can often be guarded about their emotions or any difficulties they may be experiencing.

It's incredibly important of course for our Gillas Lane children to have someone to confide in when they are confused, upset or unsure of themselves - and to know that they can do so without fear of being judged or getting into trouble.

Read these 10 top tips to explore how to encourage open and honest discussions with your child.
